Note: This statement was released by Superintendent Donaldo R. Batiste at 6 p.m. on October 8. At the time of this statement, representatives from the Union and Board were still meeting with a federal mediator for the day. No decision has been made in regards to school tomorrow. During my tenure as Superintendent, I have worked alongside many teachers and parents to improve the quality of for education our students. We have done so through the hard work of our teachers, parents and District staff. We have also made significant investments in our schools and programs, over the years. As you are aware, the Board and Teachers’ Union are meeting again as of this writing. I can report to you that progress is being made. We are hopeful that both parties can come together soon to reach a fair resolution that protects the future of the entire school system and its employees. It has been widely reported that two main issues still remain – salary and healthcare benefits. We have all seen the percentage increases that the Teachers Union is proposing for the coming years, as well as the Board’s response. At the end of the day, I believe we all can agree that the compromise will be found somewhere in the middle. This sort of compromise would avert a long, drawn-out strike that no one really wants to see happen. It would also ensure the financial future of the District and our ability to meet the educational needs of our students going forward, while engaging the best teachers we can employ. We want all parents and the community to know that our negotiations team is working toward a fair resolution on behalf of all concerned. While we value the tremendous job our teachers do in the classroom, we also want our students back in school as much as you do. This will take working together and compromise on the parts of everyone, and I implore your help in communicating that message throughout the community. Teachers are a critical part of the learning process and I believe they deserve a fair contract. At the same time, we cannot sacrifice our ability to invest in the programs and resources our teachers need to educate our students if we sacrifice our students’ ability to succeed. You will continue to be updated on any progress that is made. Again, thank you for your commitment to Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60. Donaldo R. Batiste Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools
