Note that in the hadeeth the Prophet Sallallahu alayh wa sallam is saying to marry the one who’s RELIGION and CHARACTER pleases you. These days ( I’m just being general) it’s wealth, beauty and reputation which is given preference. I’m not saying that these things should be completely undermined, especially beauty as it’s important to find your spouse attractive, and wealth to a certain extent because they would need to provide for you (if your the woman), but to completely disregard someone who has beautiful deen and character just because you may not find them too attractive or their job occupation isn’t the greatest would be sheer stupidity. You can grow to love someone for their beautiful character, however you will only begin to hate someone with bad character, regardless of outer appearance. And those looks will fade with time anyway, but a beautiful heart will remain beautiful ^_^ bi iznillah. And as for having good religion, a man/woman who knows his/her deen and fears Allah SWT will fulfill their spouses rights properly, because Allah SWT has made it a duty upon them. And most importantly - strive to be God conscious yourself and seek a spouse with taqwa, you will lead each other to jannah and have righteous children in sha Allah. Why do you think so many divorces and family issues occur between spouses? As it says in the hadeeth “…if you do not do so, there will be tribulations upon the earth…” People are marrying with the wrong intentions, for the worldly possessions. And those with the valuable characteristics; religion and character are being rejected for it. May Allah SWT provide us all with righteous spouses and offspring. Ameen.
