Note this man who died in custody is characterized as an upstanding citizen who suffered a manic episode resulting from his ongoing struggles with bi-polar disorder. I have a few observations. Though he was a black man, I want to add to #blacklivesmatter the less-used hashtag #mentallyilllivesmatter. I know something about bipolar, but because of ongoing, undeserved stigma I dont want to disclose the person I know well who has been successfully treated for it for decades. Treatment can be quite effective for most, but can take time (sometimes years) to fine-tune. Bipolar is very common. When in a moderately manic state (hypomania), bipolar individuals can be some of our most creative and strongest leaders in arts, sciences, and politics (see, Lincoln, William Tecumseh Sherman, Churchill, Hemingway, and many more, including this list with a more contemporary focus: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_with_bipolar_disorder) They are not merely weak individuals best viewed as permanently disabled. When in a hypomanic state or simply not in severe depression, they often contribute mightily to society! This would explain why this man can be described as both an upstanding citizen and one who struggles with mental illness. A full-blown manic episode can be terrifying. While it often involves intense euphoria, it definitely appears crazy and may also involve extreme negative emotions and conduct, such as irritability and anger. The depression phase can be deadly, as many commit suicide. The first step in treatment is immediate pacification with an injection of a strong drug that is useful only short-term. It can have very quick effects. It doesnt sound like this man got that. One problem is that since the deinstitutionalization movement police have too often become the mental health treaters of first resort and jails the mental hospitals. I imagine better police forces have specialists who can appropriately deal with mental illness issues. I also imagine many do not. This is yet another aspect of policing deserving of attention as the balance between police duties to maintain public safety and protect property, on one hand, and the sacredness of each persons life, on the other, comes under the microscope, as I hope it does..
