Note to newbies: this is not, in any way targeted towards you, you new people who should not know any better and are just learning the finer points of sammy-dom. This is targeted towards the breeders who should know better, and maybe need a reminder, or a kick in the pants. But it is good for you new guys to read, because I bet that my words might stick in your mind, and help you learn not to follow down the ugly, typical dog show breeding fad and help you learn the finer points of what our breed standard means. Important part of our breed standard: (c) Loin and Back - The withers forms the highest part of the back. Loins strong and slightly arched. The back should be straight to the loin, medium in length, very muscular and neither long nor short-coupled. The dog should be just off square--the length being approximately 5 per cent more than the height. Females allowed to be slightly longer than males. The belly should be well shaped and tightly muscled and, with the rear of the thorax, should swing up in a pleasing curve (tuck-up). Croup must be full, slightly sloping, and must continue imperceptibly to the tail root. What this says: No, the topline should not be that of a Dobermans (which says Back short, firm, of sufficient width, and muscular at the loins, extending in a straight line from withers to the slightly rounded croup.) Doberman=straight from wither to croup. No arch in loin. Sammy= straight from wither to loin. You know WHY>!? Cuz the loin should not be straight. So can we PLEASE STOP SELECTING AGAINST DOGS THAT HAVE A SLIGHTLY ARCHED LOIN AND HAVE THESE STUPID STRAIGHT AND SLOPING TOPLINES FROM WITHER TO CROUP. BAD BAD BAD TYPICAL SHOW DOG FAD. FYI, this also means that if your dog is swaybacked, it is doing the opposite of what it should through the loin. Loins strong and slightly arched
