Note to self; though I am wise enough to know not to turn my back - TopicsExpress

Note to self; though I am wise enough to know not to turn my back on a horse, I learnt a lesson today. WH Percy, adopted by our dear pre - birthday volunteer, Joy Barling, is obviously feeling Spring in his veins. This boy arrived at body condition score zero, a year and a bit ago. He has struggled with on and off diarhoea, depression (yes, I believe equines can get depression) & scurfy fur. He has been in with WH Monty, keeping him company, & has been slowly putting on weight, & looking perkier. We have noticed he will now chase Ollie the rooster, or Billy the cat, out of his yard. Well, today, I went into their yard, pooh rake in hand, walked pass Percy, &, with my back to him, bent over slightly, to pick up some pooh. Within a split second, he had launched into a vertical rear, attempting to bite my upper back, but just grabbing my loose jumper. I soun around, roared at him, chased him round the yard, & reestablished my position within the pecking order. Big lesson- I was complacent as it was meek and mild Percy & Monty. Bad move. Good news is that he is apparently feeling quite perky. I dont feel it was a full on attack, more a dominance attempt, which we pulled up short. Aunty Emma the vet, is coming Thursday, to recheck Monty, so we will see what she feels re gelding him. I couldnt find any descended testicles, so we may need to wait a bit longer (I inspected after the episode) before hos operation. Lucky he is so tiny. Big lesson though.
