Notes from Self Therapy session lol The respect and gratitude I have for organ donors along with their families is beyond measure and they are indeed heroes. More and more people are becoming live donors selflessly giving a kidney or part of a liver to someone they love or even those they’ve never met. Then there are families who have tragically lost someone who they loved beyond measure yet rose above their grief to give the greatest gift of all by donating organs and extending life for someone who would die without them. With that being said, in my humble opinion the greatest of all heroes are those who are organ recipients themselves. Their stories go untold. Unless you yourself or you personally know someone who has undergone a transplant you have no idea what they go through before, during or after the transplant. I hope by sharing Lacie’s story you too will see why I see organ transplant recipients as the greatest heroes of all. Having an organ transplant is nothing, I repeat nothing like what is portrayed in movies or TV. The medical advances being made in transplantation are exploding. Just boggles my mind. There is now an entire area of my brain stuffed full of life altering information on all things transplant. None of which was even conceivable in my mind before Lacie’s illness. When Lacie first arrived in Pittsburgh we thought we had a pretty accurate idea of what we were in for but the reality was far different than what we had ever imagined. We thought Lacie would meet Dr. Kareem along with the transplant team and be immediately placed on the transplant list after her evaluation, wait a month or two then she’d get her transplant. You know, just like they show on TV. But oh my, were we in for an entirely different ride.
