Notes from rural Panama: A neighbor kindly gave us the head of some gigantic ocean fish. To me, a strange thing to see cooked and on the serving platter, but it was quite delicious, and the skull and other less edible parts went out to Lula, who was quite thrilled to be included in the feast. Lula, as some of you will remember, is the pit bull that belonged to the neighbors (the family including the main members of my neighborhood grandchildren, Julie, Kenal, and Keisa). They have moved to another place (unhappy story), and left Lula behind. You may remember that Lula one day not long ago got free from her chain somehow, and I was the only one who could get her to come at my call and submit to the chain again. Well, it appears that poor abandoned starving Lula is now mine. This is one of the few things about Panama that I do not like, the way they treat other species of animals with little regard or consideration. A curious thing to me last night to be engaged in an extended conversation with a Pole about the Holocaust, sharing personal recollections that we have heard, and our reading on the subject (we both have read Elie Wiesel, and I also shared my recollection of reading Terrence Des Pres). And odd that the conversation was in our only mutual language, Spanish.
