Notes from the Road: Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, - TopicsExpress

Notes from the Road: Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, 15 (with apologies to Hunter S. Thompson) As promised, I intend for this site to be a running dialogue with voters, updates on my progress, and a sharing of ways in which we can join together in solving Savannahs myriad problems. The writer in me, however, also seeks to give you an inside glimpse of What Its Like to Run for Public Office, in the spirit of my old friend Hunter S. Thompson. It might interest fans of The Mad Doctor to know that he once said of my work: Murray Silver is the missing link between Tom Robbins and Carlos Castaneda. But I digress. I am a newcomer to running for office. But this is not my first political rodeo: I have been working on campaigns for mayor, governor, US senate, and president since 1968. My father before me had worked on Georgia campaigns at every level. His father was a wealthy man and candidates beat a path to his door for donations. My father, being a lawyer, found himself in the middle of political campaigns, and his support of Sam Caldwell for Georgia Commissioner of Labor won him the job of General Counsel to the Labor Dept. in 1966. Later, my father was campaign finance chair for every campaign Andy Young ever ran and won, including two terms as mayor of Atlanta. Working for Andys campaigns was fun for me because I was promoting concerts to raise funds. We brought Bill Withers and Ben Vereen and Harry Belafonte to town for events, and Muhammad Ali appeared onstage in support. The most interesting job I ever held in a campaign was Carl Sanders for Governor of Georgia: it was my task to hand sign Carls signature to thousands of mass mailings for that personal touch. I mustve signed Carls name more times to letters than he did in his entire lifetime. Anyway, I interrupt this ongoing political message to bring you anecdotes of life on the road to the gold dome. For those of you waiting on a mission statement, youll get it, but not all at once. For every good idea I share here I fully expect the current administration to cheat off of my paper in order to pull the teeth out of my campaign, or, even worse, attempt to tear down our ideas before weve had a chance to employ them. Oh, Im not done with laying out plans for Job #1: Public Safety. The comment I made yesterday is only phase one of how we fix the police department and reduce crime. Please, friends and detractors, allow for the process. The election isnt until November. We have plenty of time for agendas.
