Notes from the Wildlife Curator: Enrichment is vital for animals - TopicsExpress

Notes from the Wildlife Curator: Enrichment is vital for animals in captivity – wild and domestic alike. It helps to stimulate their minds in a finite area. You can give an animal an enrichment item, though, but you can’t make him play. Case in point: today our snakes each got a branch of cherry laurel to investigate. Our speckled kingsnake went to climbing right away, slithering up and down the branch. Our timber rattlesnake, however, couldnt be bothered from the last potted plant she killed by sitting in it to go look at the new thing in her exhibit. Psst! By the way. Do you have a child that is interested in hands on learning about animal husbandry, including animal enrichment? Stay tuned then – in the upcoming weeks we will make an announcement about our new Junior Animal Keeper Class!! - Chivon Morse, Wildlife Curator
