Notes from this months community assembly. If you missed it, we hope to see you next month! Faith Voices for Jefferson City Community Assembly December 15, 2014 On Monday, December 15, Faith Voices for Jefferson City held its monthly Community Assembly, facilitated by Rev. WT Edmonson of Second Baptist Church. 24 individuals from 13 different faith communities participated! An opening Faith Reflection from the Hebrew Bible (Isaiah 5) was given by Rev. Jeannie Martin-Dudenhoeffer of First United Methodist Church. After some discussion, the Assembly voted to change the date of the regular monthly assembly to the 4th Monday of each month. It has become clear over the past couple of years, as we have worked to improve public transportation in Jefferson City, that we need to be more engaged in the proceedings of our city government. Because the City Council meets on the same night as our assembly, as well as the same night as the Jefferson City chapter of the NAACP, it was determined that the assembly date should be changed. Please note your calendar, the next Faith Voices for Jefferson City Community Assembly will be Monday, January 26, 6:30pm at Quinn Chapel AME Church. The assembly received updates on the Homelessness Task Force, Citizens for JeffTran regarding the Public Transit Advisory Committee, efforts for Medicaid Expansion, plans for the legislative session by the African American Clergy Coalition, and the formation of a Jefferson City Faith/Labor Alliance. There was also a presentation by Tom Kruckemeyer regarding the formation of a non-profit organization that can make loans at a reasonable interest rate to assist individuals and families stuck in the debt trap caused by predatory lending. He is specifically in need of donated office space to keep overhead low. For specific information on any of these issues, please email michelle@missourifaithvoices to have your name and contact information added to the respective list. Finally, we watched and discussed a video with Rev. Dr. William Barber discussing a vision for a Third Reconstruction in America. View the video by clicking the link below. Upcoming Opportunities to be a voice in the cause of justice: TODAY, Wednesday 12/17: Vigil of Compassion and Hope: Anti Death Penalty Action across from the Supreme Court, 207 W. High, Jefferson City. Participants will be asking the Supreme Court to set NO more new execution dates in Missouri. Faith and Labor Breakfast, January 6, 7:30am, at Bones in Jefferson City. This is a joint project of Faith Voices for Jefferson City, MO Jobs with Justice, and the Central MO Labor Movement. Special guests for the January 6 meeting are the co-chairs of the St. Louis Faith/Labor Alliance, Rev. Jon Stratton and Mr. Don Wiley. They will share how their monthly meetings spurred Faith and Labor leaders to work together to improve the lives of Missouri families. RSVP to Brenda Haller at 573-634-3303 or email moutu.exsec@embarqmail by December 30, 2014. Citizens for JeffTran is working on identifying the best ways to support and provide meaningful input to the newly created Public Transit Advisory Committee. If you are interested in working with Citizens for JeffTran to ensure that all Jefferson City residents have access to the transportation they need to live and work successfully in our community, please come to the next meeting, Monday, January 12 at 4:30pm, First Baptist Church, room 512.
