Notes like these from students give me so much life: Dear Professor McCarthy: Something I wanted to share about your class - Ive always liked history, but I really fell in love with it because of Howard Zinn. I remember realizing for the first time in early high school that there were multiple perspectives of history (this was astounding to me) and that being objective and neutral about it is not really as great as people make it out to be. Zinn made me feel passionate and engaged and like I personally had a stake and voice in the shaping of history. Something awesome? Your class makes me feel this way. I first realized how distantly I approached the subject when I found myself a little weirded out when people started bringing up their own experiences during class discussions; that was, until now, a faux-pas. It never happened in any of my classes before, but suddenly, because of these comments, the history we study became so much more active and alive and real to me. Throughout middle school and high school, history was just a series of interesting stories found in a textbook and meant to be memorized, and we werent even allowed to use the word I in our essays because that was supposedly not academic. Now it seems like its alive and moving and shape-shifting in front of me. I love it.
