Notes on 111th Precinct Community Council Meeting By Nancy Tognan, representing Bayside Hills Civic Association Date of Meeting: September 3, 2013 The 111th Precinct’s new Community Affairs Officer is John Erdman, who replaced Bill Conway (retired). Our Crime Prevention Officer is Luigi Galliano. Lt. Heffernan spoke about the reporting of chronic complaints, such as noisy restaurants or abandoned/derelict vehicles. The proper way to report these is by calling 311 or using the 311 website. This produces the proper paperwork for the precinct to work on these problems. If you feel that the precinct is not resolving a chronic problem, please call the precinct Community Affairs office at 718-279-5295. Note on ticketing/towing of vehicles where it is legal to park: A vehicle may be ticketed/towed if it is parked in the same on-street location for more than 7 days. The police cannot take action until they have observed the vehicle, marked its tire location, and return at least 7 days later. Do not park your car on-street if you intend to be on vacation more than 7 days. If a vehicle is “derelict”, i.e. its registration has expired more than 30 days ago, it may also be towed. Capt. Huerta spoke on the latest fraud: a phone call from someone claiming that “your son is in jail, send $3,000.” He also spoke of the ongoing problems of identity theft, ATM PIN theft (cover your hand as you enter the PIN), tire and rim thefts (wheel locks may help), and automobile break-ins to steal visible goods left on seats. Capt. Huerta said that crime this year is about equivalent to the same period last year. Note that if you want to view the precinct’s crime reports, Google “NYC 111th Precinct” and click on “Crime Statistics”.
