Nothing is more frustrating as a parent than having to balance the - TopicsExpress

Nothing is more frustrating as a parent than having to balance the guilt you feel of denying your kids something good and fun, and teaching them to be responsible and giving relevant discipline. Sheepie was supposed to go to a Chinese New Year celebration this evening, that his tutor, Lin Gu, wanted him to go to. He had been looking forward to it. So I made sure to stress to him today, that he needed to clean his playroom with his brothers and have it entirely done, if he wanted to go. I told him this first thing in the morning, so he had a clear expectation of what needed to be done. Short of the two hours he was at a birthday party today, he has been in there working all day. I reminded him of what needed to happen, but never fought with him, or gave other consequences for it not being done. On the one hand I feel really bad that he is missing his first real exposure to Chinese culture with his teacher. But on the other hand, I am not sure how else to get him to understand that sometimes we can not do other things until we have completed a pressing task (which this time, cleaning his playroom, really was). :S
