Nothing like a big assembly to make one aware how reflexive it is to judge other peoples parenting. I was at a scout event last night, and caught myself reacting several times to behaviors that I would never tolerate in my own children. The knee-jerk thought was, Dont those parents care? And then I would have to remind myself that I dont know what battles those parents are fighting, or the compromises theyve had to make (as we all must), and that somebody else at that very moment was bound to be looking at me and my child, and wondering, Doesnt she care? There are no perfect scores awarded in parenting. Lets assume most of us do care, very much, and are doing the best we can.
