Nothing short of violence or threat of violence should ever reciprocate violence. If one wants a society where everyone is free to speak their minds, then one must accept the existence of speech one might find insulting, offensive, distasteful, disgusting, etc. Some people dont want to live in a society with such freedom. They use religion as an excuse to enforce control. In reality, religion as a tool for an individual can be about spiritual exploration. Under such usage, individual freedom MUST be required in order for one to truly choose a good path and to truly understand ones conclusions. Truth and wisdom are resistant to ridicule and questioning. But organized herd religion exists SOLELY to control the masses. No questioning. No allowance for different behavior. It creates an environment where there is no choice. Accept, or be punished. Even the mildest of Christian flavors has this feature when you examine the alleged afterlife consequences. And just like what happened with Islam, violent men with a separate agenda have harnessed the controlling powers of religion to get the faithful, unquestioning horde to execute their aims. After all - no questioning. No individual interpretation. The truth is what you are told and can never be examined or questioned or mocked. And that is all mockery and satire are - its a kind of questioning. Its an examination and a criticism presented as a statement. Its an observation intended to make one truly look and truly ask. And some people will do ANYTHING to hold onto the illusion and will not tolerate it being questioned or examined. Because in many cases - for every organized religion IMO - questioning and examination leads only to complete loss of power and control. Not only do the powers that be not want this - the sheep need a shepherd lest they need to be responsible for themselves. They can be made to fight to preserve that status quo even more vigorously.
