Notings from Shahid Bhagat Singhs Jail Note Book (shahidbhagatsingh.org/index.asp?linkid=30). Met Shaheed Bhagat Singhs grandson (Prof Jagmohan Singh (son of Shaheed Bhagat Singhs sister), Director of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Creativity Centre. We (Prof Jagmohan Singh, Colin Gonsalves (Eminent Supreme Court Advocate), Prof. Swarnajeet Kaur and myself) were part of the Jury of Peoples Tribunal on Slim Demolition, Rehabilitation, and Urbanization in Chandigarh, yesterday, 25th May, 2014). It was heart rending to hear what the CityMakers (whom govt and people call slum dwellers, urban poor, but who are urban workers; without whom any city will come to standstill) in Chandigarh have faced: brutal evictions, beatings, deaths etc. Will share more on that soon. Chandigarh administration seems utterly unaccountable to anyone. What Bhagat Singh has then noted is still true of our govt even today: Gov’t of India Rt. Hon’ble Edwin S. Montague Secretary of State for India , said in the house of commons in 1907 :--- The Goverment of India is too wooden , too iron ,too inelastic ,too antidiluvian to be of any use for modern purpose. The Indian Government is indefensible. British Rule in India :- Dr. Ruthford’s Words :- British Rule as it is carried on in India is the lowest and most immoral system of government in the world--- the exploitation of one nation by another .
