Novel Excerpt Sniper Eyes It was a cool morning, the chilly air saturating the jungle as fog covered the skies above. Reagan found herself lying on her stomach under dirt, with elephant grass taller than her concealed her. She felt a heavy weight on her back and had a rifle with it’s strap crossing her body. Everything was so silent that she could practically hear her own heart beat. She knew she couldn’t make a single sound. Ever so slightly, she lifted her left arm and right leg barely above the ground and began to low-crawl. The grass surrounding her barely moved an inch. She had no idea where she was or what she was doing but all she knew was that she had to remain hidden among the grass, almost becoming a chameleon. While she didn’t know where she was she knew one thing for certain; she did not belong there. - All of a sudden , she could hear rustling ahead of her and also hear a man’s voice. She froze at her spot, not moving a muscle. The man’s voice and the rustling of the grass was only getting louder, which meant that the man was headed right her way. She felt a lump in her throat when the grass in front of her swayed just about an inch. It wasn’t much but it was enough to heighten her fear and increase her alertness, for the man was just barely feet away from her. The only thing moving from Reagan’s position was her heart beating, which was beating faster. The man was saying something Asian...she didn’t know what language per se but she knew it sounded pretty close to Chinese. The rustling in the grass stopped. Judging by the way the man spoke, he seemed pretty agitated. - She then heard a second man speak, who sounded a bit more calm than the first man. From the sounds of it, it sounded like the second man was trying to somehow reason with the first. After about a few moments of conversing, Reagan heard the rustling noises again and they began fading; they were walking away from where she was. Reagan felt her heart beat go back at a steady pace. She wanted to let out a huge sigh of relief that the men walked away from her position but she didn’t dare. She could feel beads of sweat running down her face and the back of her neck. That was a seriously close call. She knew she had to get moving before the two men...or more...came back in that same position. So she slowly but steadily resumed crawling. She had no idea how far she was to her target but she knew that she must get to it as soon as she can. A wave of urgency and revenge swept over her. She had to do this and she couldn’t fail...her life depended on it. This was what she chose. She was not going anywhere until she saw her target clearly, pulled her trigger and saw the bullet fly through his head, with blood and brain matter splattering. - She unraveled the strap from around her body and immediately began setting up her rifle, positioning it to where the butt of the rifle pressed against her shoulder. She looked through the scope of the rifle, where she can see things much more clear and close if she needed to. All Rights Reserved - Jane Springfield
