November 11 2014 Breast Cancer is an Unpredictable Disease What Every Women and Doctor must read! In spite of the plethora of information, research, and vast amounts of money collected to find a cure for breast cancer , over 40,000 women in the U.S. and over 500,000 women worldwide die each year from this diabolical disease.. 75% of breast cancers occur in women not known to be at elevated risk (Harvard Radiology Professor Kopans) “The vast majority of women in North America, Europe and Asia do not do breast self-examination” Robert A. Smith PhD (A. C. S. ) My wife, an RN, and her three sisters do not do breast self-examination. My niece who developed a breast cancer at 25 , then the second one 20 years later, and all her friends, do not do breast self-examination as they are frightened as to what they might find.. Irrational but true! A tremendous amount of misinformation is passed on to women Professor Gotzsche, who has a large following, claims breast self-examination and mammography do more harm than good. NBC’s Nancy Snyderman recommends mammography beginning at age 50, ignoring the fact that one in six breast cancers occurs in the 40 to 49 year age group. Dr. Welch, a proponent of over diagnosis and a critic of mammography screening and others, continue give women misinformation on mammography. The prestigious New England Medical Journal prints his articles, which many doctors read. . Doctors have been instructed by the United States Preventive Services Task Force not to teach their patients breast self examination. Interesting, as the vast majority of women do not do breast self-examination. Many doctors do not perform adequate clinical breast examination. Possibly because of time constraints, Doctors over reliance on negative mammography** and substandard practice often result in malpractice cases, and in some cases, untimely deaths. ** youtu.be/Jow33EWcBAo Is it any wonder that women continued to die at an alarming rate? A percentage of women are doomed from day one due to the aggressive nature of their disease. Others have late stage breast cancer that has already metastasized (Stage IV) due to a delay in seeking medical attention. Doctors and their women patients must play a more significant role in screening for breast cancer while waiting for a cure. Ian Grant-Whyte MA.MD (Cambridge) A.B.F.P.(USA)(ret) L.M.C.C..(Canada)
