November 13, 2014 Dear Friends, On Sunday I will continue our Thanksgiving sermon series. We have already looked at Thanksgiving for the Past and Thanksgiving for the Present: When Things are Going Well. This Sunday I will look at Thanksgiving for the Present: When Things are not Going Well. My text will be from James 1:1-4 and will be supplemented by Paul’s words in Romans 5:1-5, two different witnesses to the power of faith and especially in relationship to suffering. Everybody goes through troubles, setbacks, and difficulties in life. Some people even experience the majority of the life to be difficult, from chronic pain to a debilitating disease or to abject poverty. How are we to offer Thanksgiving when life is hard or difficult? I will share some truths that I have both learned through living through difficulties and that I have gleaned from walking with others through their difficult times. I hope you can be with us. And yes, there is a forecast for snow for our area on Saturday into Sunday morning. The lot will be plowed and the sidewalks cleared and we will be having morning worship services. We will also remember and pray for those who are unable to get out and be present with us. Blessings and prayers for your peace, Rusty Estimate of Giving Cards and Offerings Thank you for those who have returned their 2015 Estimate of Giving Cards for the Church Ministry Budget. If you haven’t had the chance to return yours, you may do so in worship or feel free to mail it back to the church. The same would be true if you are unable to be in worship, please consider mailing your tithe or offering. Thank you. Blood Drive on Sunday Did you know that a single pint of blood can save at least two lives? Anyone age 16 and over weighing at least 115 lbs is eligible to donate (though a 16 year old does need parental consent). If you haven’t made an appointment, walk-ins are welcome; donations will be accepted in the Family Life Center this Sunday, November 16 between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Support our Ablaze Youth Group Our youth group is sponsoring a Soup Bar this Sunday in the Family Life Center between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. You may eat in or to-go containers will be available. Enjoy homemade, delicious soups and support our youth’s summer mission trip with your free-will donations. Serving at reStart We will be preparing and serving the lunch at reStart on Saturday, November 22. The menu will include chili, cornbread, crackers, carrots/broccoli, and dessert. If you can help provide the food and/or help in serving, please contact Arlene Millard at 913-345-0466. 2nd Session of Covenant Bible Study We are currently taking sign-ups for members of our next two classes of Covenant Bible Study. Both are offered on Wednesdays beginning December 3 and last through February 4 with a two week break for Christmas and New Year’s. One is in the morning from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and the other in the evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The focus of this session will be Living the Covenant. The deadline to sign-up is Sunday, November 23 in order to have enough materials on hand. Coffee with the Pastors If you have questions or a desire to get more involved in the life or a program at Red Bridge UMC or are interested in joining the church, please come and enjoy a time of conversation and refreshment with myself and Terry on Sunday, November 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the narthex (outside of the sanctuary).
