November 14, 2014 Vietnam Imprisons Fourteen Anti-China Rioters Affecting Foreign Firms in Vung Ang 0 by Nguoi BVNQ • [Human Rights] Email, RSS FollowEmail Print By Vu Quoc Ngu Defend the Defenders The People’s Court of Vietnam’s central province of Ha Tinh on Nov 12 imprisoned fourteen local people who participated in the anti-China riots in mid-May that wrecked some foreign-invested companies in the Vung Ang Industrial Zone, state media reported. vungang1-2567-1415763124The court found that the ten citizens are guilty of conducting social disorders and acts against on-duty state officials, and sentenced them to between 15 months and 39 months in prison. Two others were sentenced a probation of 15 months and 18 months in the trial which was covered by China’s state television CCTV. According to the verdict, the people participated in anti-China protests on May 13-14 , nearly two weeks after China illegally deployed its $1 billion HYSY-981 oil rig in Vietnam’s central offshore. They attacked Chinese workers and destroyed Taiwanese Formosa Steel Complex and Chinese firms MCC19 and MCC5, causing heavy damages to the foreign companies and affecting Vietnam’s investment environment. On the same day, the People’s Court of the southern city of Bien Hoa held a trial against 26 anti-China rioters who attacked and stole properties of foreign-invested companies in the local Tam Phuoc Industrial Zone on May 13-14. The court gave them heavy jail sentences between six months and 30 months. The anti-China protests, with the participation of tens of thousands of workers and local residents broke out in industrial zones in Ha Tinh, Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Ho Chi Minh City in mid May. Some of the demonstrations turned violent, during which rioters attacked Chinese workers and destroyed properties of Chinese companies; many Taiwanese and South Korean firms were also attacked by mistake. Vietnam’s authorities have arrested thousands of protestors and brought dozens of them to court.
