November 15, 2013 Smoke in East Gaston High School Causes Evacuation This morning at approximately 10:30am Gaston County Police Officer Eddie Burgess, School Resource Officer at East Gaston High School located at 1744 South Lane Rd. Mt. Holly, smelled the odor of smoke on the second floor of the school. School officials evacuated the building and the fire department was called. The East Gaston Volunteer Fire Department responded along with Community VFD, Mt. Holly Fire Department, Spencer Mountain VFD, Lucia Riverbend VFD, and Stanley Fire Department responded to the scene. East Gaston VFD Assistant Chief Ricky Brown advised the smoke was produced by an HVAC motor in a classroom near the senior dining area. Assistant Chief Brown said firefighters used positive pressure fans to clear the smoke from the building and then checked the area to make sure it was clear of carbon monoxide before letting students and faculty back in the building. Students and faculty were evacuated for approximately 30 minutes. Gaston County Emergency Medical Service, Stanley CD Rescue, and the Gaston County Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the scene.
