To date, all 44 Malaysian citizens onboard MH17 have been identified. The remains of Allahyarhamah Puan Sri Siti Amirah will be buried in the Netherlands following request from her family members. During this difficult time, the families of the passengers and crew of MH17 remain foremost on our minds and we continue to keep them in our prayers. I wish to express my utmost appreciation to all parties both local and international who have supported in the recovery and handling of the victims. Echoing YAB Dato Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister, I wish to reiterate our commitment to the families of the passengers and crew of MH17 and the fact that justice must be served on the criminals who caused this heinous act. Towards this end, investigations at the crash site must continue despite the on-going geopolitical situation on the ground. In light of MH17 and MH370, I addressed the 203rd Session of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council held on Monday, October 27, 2014. I called upon member states to adopt mandatory procedures and protocols that would increase safety and security standards in international civil aviation. The world must view this tragedy as a wake-up call; we can no longer be complacent and must take preventative measures now. Therefore, I made recommendations before the Council including mandatory timely reporting of relevant information regarding flight risks to ICAO by member states and for ICAO to establish global protocol to disseminate this information to member states and airlines. I am pleased to note that the ICAO Council has unanimously adopted a Resolution condemning, in the strongest terms, the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine. The Council also reviewed the Report of the Task Force established under ICAO to explore Risks to Civil Aviation Arising From Conflict Zones. [END]
