November 2. Brisk. Hit the beach early. The wind is howling on the shore today. And I gotta tell ya hitting that water really shook the morning cob webs off, lol. Its funny, the dropping air temps and water at 61 were not to bad.Even the rough water manageable. But the whipping wind and the sand make for a mean pair. I saw some fisherman at a distance to the south. None to the north. I again made my camp just north of the lifeguard shack. The only people in close proximity were two metal gatherers. A man and a woman. I sometimes feel out of place among the people who are on the beach this time of year. But most people that you see up there now have some kind of purpose. And other than the occasional nod, they are very focused on their task. These groups fall into a kind of pecking order. The kings are the surfers.A step above all the rest. These guys are hard core. Getting into the biggest surf during the nastiest weather year round. The true marvels of the beach. Then you have your fishermen. Again battling the elements whatever they may be. Even entering the water, just not to the extreme of the surfers. Then there are the metal detector guys and gals. These people also seem to be there no matter the conditions. Always trying to beat their competitors to the punch. Then there are the shell gatherers. Not as hard core as the above three but they do put there time in in surprisingly harsh conditions. Finally the random off season beach walkers. They put there time in but not as consistantly as the above four. I like the fact that all of these people are so focused they barely take notice of the guy, out of the corner of their eye, entering the sea on a brisk, nippy Jersey Shore morning.
