November 27, 1976 - “Dazz” by Brick hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 4 weeks, also peaking at #3 on the Hot 100 on January 29, 1977. Written by Ray Ransom, Reggie Hargis and Eddie Irons, it is the biggest hit for the Atlanta, GA based R&B/Funk/Jazz band. Originally known as Hellaphanalia, the band (featuring Ray Ransom, Reggie Hargis and Donald Nevins) will record a one off single for Ray Charles’ Tangerine Records before splitting up. The trio will meet Jimmy Brown and Eddie Irons on the Atlanta club circuit and will ask them to join their new band, in which they will agree. Brick will record their debut album “Good High” over a period of one year with day long recorded sessions (usually one a month) until they have enough material to fill out a full LP. The song’s title is a contraction of the band coined term “disco jazz or danceable jazz”, and is put together from various pieces of music the band has worked out while jamming on stage and in the studio. The track and album are recorded at Southside Sound in the Atlanta suburb of College Park, on an eight track multitrack tape recorder. Not long after they finish recording their first album, Brick will be spotted at a local club by Bang Records president Eddie Biscoe who will like what he hears and signs the band. After the R&B chart topping success of “Dazz”, it will quickly crossover to the pop chart, cracking the top five and selling nearly two million copies in the US.
