November 3, 2013 TRIAL AND TRIUMPH (Jesus said) “Everything is possible for him who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; helps me overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9:23-24 What a glorious promise: Everything is possible for him who believes. And yet it is the greatness of the promise that constitutes the trial of faith. At first we do not really believe its truth. And when we have grasped it, we think that the faith needed is utterly beyond our reach. When Christ said to the father of the child, “Everything is possible for him who believes,” the man was cast into deeper despair. How could his meager faith be able to work a miracle? But when he looked into the face of Christ, and he saw the love in those tender eyes, he felt sure that this Man not only had the power to heal his child, but also could inspire in him the faith he needed. Jesus’ presence made possible both a miracle of healing and the miracle that this man should have so great a faith. And with tears the father cried, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” the very greatness of faith’s trial was the greatness of its triumph. What a lesson! Of all things that are possible to faith, the most impossible is that I should be able to exercise such faith. The abiding presence of Christ is possible to faith, and this faith is possible to the soul that clings to Christ and trusts Him. You are entirely dependent on Christ for the faith as well as the blessing. And when you become conscious of the unbelief that is still struggling within, cast yourself on the power and the love of Jesus saying, “Help me overcome my unbelief!” A bless Sunday to everyone!
