November 3, 2013: Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Wis 11:22-12:2; Ps 145:1-2, 8-11, 13-14; 2 Thes 1:11-2:2; Lk 19:1-10 In our first reading, from the book of Wisdom we hear of God’s great love of his creation, particularly for his love of souls. God created us out of his love and it is his unconditional love for us that marks and defines his relationship to us. We too often forget how much God loves us. St. Alphonsus once said that God is “crazy in love with us.” Even in our brokenness and sinfulness God loves us completely and is always seeking us out to love us all the more. In the Gospel today we are presented with the familiar story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector. Zacchaeus’ desire to see Jesus reflects the innate inward desire that each of has to see our Lord, to gaze into the face of pure and unconditional love. No matter how sinful we may think we are we still desire to see God and experience his love. An important detail that we may over look in this story is that Jesus first sees Zacchaeus. It is our Lord that is first seeking us out and he seeks us out because of this crazy love he has for us. All that we need to do is lift our heads in prayer, or in the case of Zacchaeus climb a tree and we will see the great love that Christ has for us. God loves us more than we can imagine and the fact that we are sinners cannot obscure Christ’s love for us. Fr. Ted Dorcey, C.Ss.R. usccb.org/bible/readings/110313.cfm
