The Albayano Spirit: After Reming devastated Albay, we took one of our delivery trucks, filled it with relief goods and sped our way to our beloved province. We were having a lively chat until we reached Polangui. Then we fell silent. Sabi ni Butchoy (amigo ko na nag-drive kan truck): Padi..dai na an Albay.deficil na kitang makabagon kaini.erak man kan mga pamilya ta At that time, I had no witty or wise words nor strength to counter his fears. I simply said: Dalian ta na padi..kaipuhan nang marhay ining dara ta. Every place we went t..Polangui,Guinobatan,Daraga,Legazpi..every school and evacuation center,we heard the same story:The storms fury,the loss of properties,entire barangays and families wiped out like the hand of some vengeful god...But there was something missing in this bitter soup.In the voice as in the eyes of everyone..there was no desperation nor hopelessness. The children,dirty and untended as they were on those times..still played at the seesaws and the swings.Their laughter permeating through this disaster like a ray of light in an ink black tunnel.The victims stories sad as they were are still flavoured with the same dauntless resilience of their Albayano bloodlines.Though bloodied, the Albayanos has a knack of getting up and laughing at our enemies at their faces. Yesterday, I was in Albay.beholding not disaster but progress,not fearful faces but welcoming smiles, not just hope but a thirst for moving onward and steadily forward.The province had shown this country what our collective culture can achieve.
