November 6, 1973: Phil Kaufman, manager of the recently-deceased Gram Parsons steals the singers body from the Los Angeles International Airport (where it was to be shipped to a Louisiana for burial) and drives out to the desert to The Joshua Tree National Monument with Grams close friend Michael Martin They attempt to cremate Parsons corpse by pouring five gallons of gasoline into the open coffin and throwing a lit match inside. What resulted was an enormous fireball. Both men claim the cremation was Parsons last wish. The two men were arrested several days later. Since there was no law against stealing a dead body, they were only fined $750 for stealing the coffin and were not prosecuted for leaving Grams charred remains in the desert. Parsonss body was eventually buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Metairie, Louisiana.
