November 6 Blog: WHAT?!? This probably won’t be too long today but it’s something I believe I have to rant about just a little bit. Yesterday, at the Keeneland November sales, a little girl was sold & bought. She was purchased by Don Alberto Corp. for $2.85 million. Her name is Modeling & her daddy is the great Tapit. Her mommy is Teeming (by Storm Cat). As you can see by the photo, she’s considered grey or light roan in color. Pretty girl. She’s only two years old. And she’s in foal. Yes, that’s right. She’s two years old & is in foal to Distorted Humor. Of course, she’s never raced & whether or not she’s ever even had a saddle on her back is unknown. Other than looking at her breeding, only God knows if she would become a decent racehorse – or if she’d ever even make it to the track. Most veterinarians agree that a two-year old filly is more or less equivalent to a 14- or 15-year old girl, in terms of growth & mental & emotional capacity. In addition to some pregnant foals experiencing stunted growth due to their conditions, there are questions as to whether these youngsters are mentally mature enough to bond with their new-born foals & raise them properly. Now, in wild herds, it is certainly not unheard of for two year-old fillies to become pregnant & have foals. That’s determined by Mother Nature. Of course, in wild herds, there are older mares that can & do step in to help. On a racing farm? I don’t think so. Not to that degree, anyway. To this ol’ cowboy, this situation is an utter disgrace. To this ol’ cowboy, it’s disgraceful to breed a two-year old filly in captivity. And, likewise, it’s a disgrace to purchase a two-year old filly who’s already in foal. And, to pay $2.85 MILLION for her?!? To me, this is a perfect example of what’s wrong with so much of racing in America today. That so much of the money to be changed hands is being determined in breeding sheds & sales rings & not on the racetrack. Now, I hope that little Modeling has a real good, healthy pregnancy & that she foals a strong & healthy little boy or girl. For her sake & for her young’un’s sake. But for the Don Alberto Corp.? I hope that little foal can’t run a lick. Now THAT would be karma, wouldn’t it? That’s it. Peace. Out.
