November 7, 2013 – Thursday Psalm 17:8-9 – New Revised Standard Version Guard me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, 9 from the wicked who despoil me, my deadly enemies who surround me. SNAKES AND BAD EYE SIGHT Snakes have never been my favorite of God’s creatures. From my childhood I have had a deep fear and paranoia about these creatures. This was not easy living on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia. A habitat for almost every imaginable snake in North America. Unfortunately a couple of older boys were aware of my anxiety and decided to “mess with me” one day. One of them was a “paper boy” not a boy made of paper but one who delivered newspapers. On the handle bars was a canvas bag to hold the papers for delivery. After his route one day he and a friend saw me riding my bike on the other side of the street. They called out to me and asked if I would like to see the snake they had just caught. I went into a panic attack dropping my bike and running and screaming at the top of my lungs from the sight of something wriggling in the canvas bag. It turned out to be a belt and no snake at all. Had it not been for my poor eyesight and fear, I could have recognized the shape and laughed it off. The result of the situation was that I avoided ridding my bicycle on that one road for about a year. I needed to hide from the possibility that the next time it would be an actual snake. We all have fears and at times need to hide from the evil paper boys in our lives. The best place to feel secure is in the shadow of God’s protective wings. Whatever you fear today take refuge in a loving God who protects you from your deadly enemies. He will provide you with a clear vision about those snakes. Prayer: Lord, we all are confronted with evil persons who want to take control of us through cheap tricks and creating scary situations. Give us sight to see them for the imposters they are. Let us take refuge under your protective wings. Through Christ Jesus the evil one no longer has power over the good. Amen.
