November 8, 2014 (Saturday) Gospel: Application of the Parable of the Dishonest Steward (Lk. 16:9-15) Reflection: MAKE FRIENDS FOR YOURSELVES WITH DISHONEST WEALTH. Todays Gospel is an application of yesterdays parable of the dishonest steward (Lk 16:1-8). Dishonest wealth does not refer to possessions acquired illegally or dishonestly but to riches that people put their trust in and pay much attention to. Jesus does not regard wealth as evil in itself but warns that it can take people away from the true and lasting riches of Gods kingdom. To assure ourselves a place in Gods kingdom, we are to use what we have to win friends who can welcome us into the eternal dwellings. And who are these friends? Not the rich, the powerful, or the socially prominent. According to Luke, these friends are the poor, the powerless, and those forgotten by the world who will inherit Gods kingdom. By sharing of our material and immaterial wealth - treasure, time, and talent - with the poor, we gain them as friends who can take us in when our reckoning before God comes up short. Kingdom economics demands that we do this despite the risk, despite a loss of personal status, and without the benefit of reciprocity. Response: If we act prudently, using this worlds goods with one eye on the poor and the other on Gods kingdom, we will prove ourselves worthy disciples of Jesus here and hereafter.
