November 9, 1863. The Thirty-eighth trudged footsore into Brownsville, without seeing any rebels. When they reached the center of town they marveled at how the dusty blue coats of the soldiers contrasted with the bright colors of the Mexican clothes and blankets. The boys marched out of town about a mile and set up camp on the Rio Grande, opposite the town of Matamoros. Not much of the Mexican city could be seen from camp, there were cane huts with thatched roofs just below the mud walled buildings of the town. From a distance the bending palmetto and the graceful arms of the sago palm made it appear enchanting. The most obvious landmarks were a mountain of bales of cotton along the far riverbank, and two large church spires—the peel of the church bells could be heard in the evening.
