November spotlight: *Low back pain* part 3. What are the important facts about pain? Keep positive :) PAIN is 100% real, but it does not accurately signals damage. The Amount of pain does NOT equal the amount of tissue damage. Let’s look at some points about pain: #1 Pain is produced by the brain, yet it is real. It’s not ‘just in your head’. It exists, it’s frustrating and it really hurts. #2 Pain is produced when the brain perceives that danger to the body exist and that action is required. Pain is an action signal. #3 Pain is a part of the survival (protection) system and any threat can be interpreted as pain. The perceived threats can be physical or emotional. It very much varies what is perceived as threat – from lack of sleep, exam stress, physical exhaustion, overtraining or even watching someone else doing the movement which causes me pain. #4 Pain is individual – it depends on context, posture, competing stimuli, emotional state, and visualisation. #5 we can use brain ‘tricks’ to help convince the body. To sum up – pain itself isn’t dangerous, it signals danger. Your body is sensitise, all the nerves and chemicals are on red alert. Ready to protect you. Luckily we know now, there are ways to ‘close the gate’, to switch off the red lights, de-sensitise the protection system. Once your brain stopped shouting ‘DANGER!DANGER! It is easier to address the tissue problem, muscle imbalances, posture, and nerve irritation. And a practical advice for your lower back pain: It’s not causing damage, it will get better. Start a pain diary for the next 7 days, write down how you feel morning, evening, night. Write down everything you got up to, and write down your pain levels throughout the day. It’ll help figure out what changes might be beneficial for you. And as always- exercise. #weAreDesignedtoMove. If it hurts when you bent forward, bent backward twice as much, motion is lotion.
