Now I know the culprits .... Utusan Malaysia & Bernama! Hurricane is hurikan, Billionaire is bilionair, jailed is dijel .... ! [ RIP Bahasa Malaysia. Despite Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka’s (DBP) best efforts, the language is slowly evolving into Bahasa Englayu. DBP has a perfectly functional website. You can search for the Bahasa equivalents of English words on the site and various dictionaries are readily available and, yet, Utusan Malaysia and Bernama are perfectly happy to invent new Englayu words every day. According to Bernama, “hurricane” is “hurikan” and “billionaire” is “billionair” in Englayu. Utusan has coined the very rempit-sounding “dijel” instead of “dipenjara.” Who needs Bahasa anyway, when our leading Bahasa publications and news sources would rather use Englayu? Why reach for a stuffy dictionary when you can just change the spelling of an English word and hey, presto, it becomes Englayu? ]
