Now I wanna talk about action flicks that are really Amazing (or, at least Good) Movies Disguised As Action Flicks. Its no accident that these two titles share one very important element: the casting of brilliant, marvelous actresses in the leading and supporting lady roles: Noomi Rapace and Isabelle Huppert; Abbie Cornish and Jennifer Ehle. These women prove beyond a doubt that actresses who can act will contribute to an action film just as marvelously as they do a period romance. I was almost-literally dragged to see Robocop. Thank Heavens. Between Samuel L. Jackson satirizing Bill ORiley and Gary Oldman posing legitimately conflicting arguments over medical ethics and military tech advancements, a very good story is told, and that story is served by the movies action sequences (not the traditional other way round). Dead Man Down stars Colin Farrell, Terrence Howard, and Dominic Cooper in the male roles. The story is solid, the acting is compelling, and every gunshot and explosion is earned. Thanks to my husband for his insistence on the occasional action flick.
