Now, Im not one to revel in the misery of others, regardless of whether I know them or not, so the news that Daniella Westbrook is living in sheltered housing and relying on handouts from friends and foodbanks in order to live and feed her kids is clearly not good, and a harsh reminder of the damage that drug addiction can do to the lives of the addict and those around them. On the other hand, announcing the fact on twitter to prevent someone else making money from selling the story to a paper, before going on TV for a nicely timed emotional interview and tearful breakdown, might be seen by some as a little bit cynical? I mean, fair enough if youre on your uppers and can make some money to feed your kids and pay the rent by dint of simply existing on a TV show sofa I guess, but I think its the announcing it on twitter and then immediately getting a TV interview that smacks of the sort of Max Clifford school of publicity work. And to do that and then cliam you did it to stop someone else making money from selling your story to the papers seems a little rich on top. Im not suggesting that Ms Westbrook is any less deserving of sympathy just because she happens to be famous, but there are several thousand families in the UK alone in similar or worse circumstances who cant just send a tweet and end up interviewed on a chat show and Im assuming receiving a fee for the appearance and the inevitable My exclusive story all this week in *insert name of highest paying tabloid here*, book deal and further TV appearances. Or is it just me?
