Now USM has no president and no provost - though both have been given positions in the System office. Thank goodness there is no financial crisis at that level... >>> Michael R. Stevenson 07/22/14 2:41 PM Dear Colleagues, The University of Southern Maine is welcoming a new president whose charge is to position USM for a strong and sustainable future. He brings an ambitious agenda and will need both our support and every available management tool to succeed. As many of you already know, I am convinced that our future—and that of the other University of Maine System campuses—depends on deep collaboration across the System and, as Provost, I have initiated and supported cross-campus collaborations in a variety of areas. Having given considerable thought to how such collaborations might best be fostered, I have decided to step out of the Provosts role at USM to begin work as the Senior Fellow for Academic Affairs for the University of Maine System. I will be working primarily with the Process Oversight Committee, providing strategic planning and policy development support for the Academic Portfolio Review and Integration Process. The USM Board of Trustees expects the Committee to develop and promote strategies that maximize our ability to provide students with access to high quality learning opportunities in a fashion that is both educationally robust and fiscally sustainable. The disruptive changes associated with rising costs and increasing student debt, the technological transformation of the experience of learning, the increasing need for higher education in career advancement, and the demographic shifts in the college-going population have coalesced to create significant challenges for USM and the University of Maine System. Through the Academic Portfolio Review and Integration process, we will develop protocols and strategies so that location or institutional practices no longer prevent our students from learning from our best teachers or accessing our most sought after programs. While I will miss the day-to-day interactions I have enjoyed as a member of the USM community, I am excited about being part of a transformation that will better position Maines system of public higher education for the future. I look forward to your involvement and our continued work together! With best regards, Michael R. Stevenson, Ph.D. Senior Fellow for Academic Affairs University of Maine System
