Now is the time for planning your spring garden and ordering your bulbs. If you choose carefully you can have daffodils flowering in your garden from January through until April. Varieties are a matter of personal choice, and the earliest are usually yellow. The January ones include Rjnvelds Early Sensation, Tamara, Treglisson, and Cornish Vanguard. February brings the first whites in Finland and Brunswick plus more yellows like Cornish Pride, Magnificence and yellow oranges like Early Flame and Loveday. There is a huge selection to choose from in March, which includes the more “fancy varieties like Early Bride, Pink Smiles, Scilly White, Golden Dawn and Hot Gossip, plus yellows like Trelawney Gold, and Golden Anniversary. Late March and April sees the arrival of varieties such as Cheerfulness, White Lion, Geranium, Silver Moon and our latest yellow Warleggan. April flowers include Poeticus, the Pheasant eye, and After All. Daffodils look amazing planted “en masse” but also look good planted in clumps dotted about an orchard or lawn. They are happy in most situations, but should not be planted under evergreen trees where they will struggle for enough light. The two key points when planting daffodils are to plant them deeply enough, (they should be planted at twice the depth of the bulb, i.e. a 3 inch bulb would need 6 ins of soil covering it.) Give them enough space to increase if you are planning to leave them in situ for any length of time. In two years you should have at least 50% more bulbs than you planted, so if they do not have space they will only produce leaves and no flowers.
