Now listen, this Christmas malarkey is supposed to be a religious - TopicsExpress

Now listen, this Christmas malarkey is supposed to be a religious celebration, although not all religions recognise it. And the ones that do complain about commercialisation, losing the religious message blah blah blah blah blah. And the ones that dont sit there all stern faced with their arms folded going on and on about how its not true to their faith. Well, guess what? For a lot of people Christmas as a religious festival ceased years ago. I am one of those people, and I believe the baby Jeebus story about as much as I believe that the earth is flat. I also believe that more harm has been done in the name of religion than probably anything else in history. So do I exclude myself from all the shenanigans on those grounds? Hell no, I love Christmas! I love the Nativity story as a fairytale or any good story that warms my heart and makes me feel good. Just like I dont believe in Santa, but the idea of Santa is bloody marvellous. I love being surrounded by festive tat, the Phil Spector Christmas album, Elvis Christmas songs, an open fire and loads of stupid, completely pointless shiny stuff that spends most of the year in the loft. I love presents under the tree, and the thought of my family ripping into them on Christmas Day to find more tat that they dont need and having a laugh about it. It makes me feel all warm inside. The point am trying to make is, for all those naysayers, why does Christmas have to be a solemn, religious un-materialistic affair only relevant to those concerned with the spreading of a certain faith. I dont use it to celebrate the birth of a probably, in my humble opinion, fictional Messiah, but I do use this wonderful time of year to try and spread some fun, love and peace to everyone. Can that be a bad thing, even though I dont buy into the religious aspect of it all? Merry Christmas to you all, and I hope that all of your drunken laughter spreads some joy around the world in these dark times Written with a Xmas hangover
