Now shipmates this aint no :poop: Back in 68 I was at Roosy Roads, Puerto Rico. Good duty and even better libs. We useta take a publico (cab) from RR to San Juan which just rocked; good chow, excellent Cuba Libres, and some damned good snakes just ripe for the pluckin. Wellnow, one Friday evening I went over, had a plate of lechon asado, a couplea beers and more Cuba Libres than were really safe and picked up a sweetie to talk philosophy with LOL. The next morning we had a bigass inspection by Commodore Dietz, commander of the Caribbean sea frontier. Uniform, not surprisingly, was trop white longs. I was all set...fresh set right outta the cleaners and properly ironed, shoes were like black glass, new set of ribbons and two day old haircut. As I was shaving, though, I noticed I had two real angry lookin hickeys and after I got my uniform on I saw those hickeys were above the edge of my collar. Shit! So when I got in ranks i tried to scootch my head down just a bit. OK then, here came the commodore troopin the line. He was reputed to be a real hardass and sure enough I could hear poor shine, dingy ribbons and other comments designed to jes plain ruin folks Saturday morning. He gets up to me - and stops. I scootch my head down a skosh more and then hear the commodore trying to stifle a laugh with his mouth closed...you know brrkkkk kkkk an all. Go to town last night, sailor? Yessir, Commodore. Have a good time? Yessir. He nodded sharply. Outstanding. Carry on! Aye aye, sir. Off he went on his merry way, giggin folks with regularity and I heaved a sigh of relief. On Monday I was busy in the shop when someone came in and said the CO wanted me standing tall in his office so I went over and five other guys were waiting to see him too. After a while we were all told to go in and the skipper told us that we had been cited by the commodore for lookin good on Saturday. Especially you, Bradford, he added. The Commodore said youre what the older Navy was all about...whatever he meant by that. So thats the tale, lads. Glad I had time to share it with you and now I gotta turn to, so Ill catch you all next time round!
