Now that 2014 Raw Nationals is over, several people have asked me how the selection process works for the World team. I have also noticed people asking the same question on here. So I figured re-posting the information on here and giving an example of different parts of the selection process would prove beneficial. Remember, all this information can be found on the USA Powerlifting website and in the IPF Technical Rules Book. Become a student of your sport and learn how things work in the organization you compete in! Qualifying Criteria & Team Selection: coaching.usapowerlifting/international-team-selection-process-qualifying-criteria/ 2015 Classic (Raw) World Teams The implementation of the new IPF weight classes at Raw Nationals allows for a clear and fair system by which to select the World Team. Those athletes who win their weight class and division (Open, Sub-Junior, Junior, or Masters) will comprise those who will be the first to be invited to represent the USA at the 2015 IPF Classic World Championship. If an athlete is unable to accept their position: All other competitors at Raw Nationals will be placed in a rank ordered list using each competitor’s wilks total. The athlete with the highest ranking who is not already on a team will be the next to be invited regardless of weight class as long as there are no more than two lifters per weight class. However, when comparing lifters of the same weight class, the lifter with the higher total will be invited. So lets use the criteria and take the Womens Open as an example. IPF Technical Rules Book 2014: powerlifting-ipf/fileadmin/data/Technical_Rules/IPF_Technical_Rules_Book_2014.pdf Each nation is allowed a maximum of 8 competitors spread throughout the range of 8 bodyweight categories for men and 7 competitors throughout the range of 7 bodyweight categories for women. Ive attached a screenshot of part of the 2014 Raw Nationals results that I sorted for this purpose. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS AS THE ACTUAL SELECTION CRITERIA OR YOUR DEFINITIVE RANKING IN THIS DIVISION. I AM NOT THE HEAD COACH, I AM NOT CURRENTLY IN CHARGE OF THE SELECTION PROCESS, ITS POSSIBLE I MADE MISTAKES, ETC. I am merely using this list as an example to show how the process works. So the lifters highlighted in yellow are our Womens Open National Champions and get the automatic bid for the World team. If any of the champions decide to decline their bid, we then go to the selection criteria rule of going by highest Wilks. In this case, this would put Marisa Inda at the top of the alternates list. But take notice of the next 2 lifters, Kristen Dunsmore and Meghan Pellatt. Kristen has the higher Wilks but she is in the same weight class as Meghan. This is where the final part of the selection criteria kicks in. When comparing lifters of the same weight class, the lifter with the higher total has the higher ranking. This is because at Worlds, the weight class winners are determined by total, not Wilks. So it makes sense to pick the lifter with the higher total to give the team the best chance of winning. So in this specific case, Meghan would be ranked higher than Kristen. Thus, in this scenario, your top 3 alternates would be: 1. Marisa Inda 2. Meghan Pellatt 3. Kristen Dunsmore Now if you are still with me, there is 1 more kicker! The selection criteria and IPF Technical Rules Book also mentions, There must not be more than 2 competitors from any one nation in any particular bodyweight category. So this means, if Jennifer Thompson and Meghan Pellatt are representing USA at Worlds in the 63kg Open division, then USA can not send any other 63kg Open Women lifters. This, in effect, would take Kristen off the alternate list completely and move the next person in line up the list which is Alicia Webb. Sorry if this was a lengthy post but I hope it was informational and helpful to coaches and lifters alike. If you have any questions, be sure to comment and ask below. Many of the world team head coaches are active in this group and can help with any questions you may have. Marisa Inda Kristen Dunsmore Meghan K Pellatt Alicia Webb Mikelina Belaineh Eric Koenreich Kelsea Marie Koenreich Mike Taylor Matt Gary Jacob Cloud Tommy Nolan Janusz Rob Schmidt
