Now that I have the physical and mental energy..... What an outstanding week of band camp with some of the best parents, students and staff on the planet. The kids worked their tails off (and had a lot of fun to). The parents ALWAYS amaze me for their willingness to sacrifice for the program. Eric Profit and Jenni Profit ran a FLAWLESS kitchen of great cooks (just like I predicted, and they had 100% on-time delicious meals). The counselors and nurses did a FANTASTIC job chaperoning and caring for our students well-being. I always enjoy watching them care for each student as their own. Not to mention many of these parents drove an ADDITIONAL 3 hours to pick up the students at the broken bus. And, finally, the staff...... wow. Amazing. A 100% veteran staff that often times knew what I wanted before I knew I wanted it. They dealt with weather, extra sectionals, a broken PA system, students, difficult music, difficult drill and a sometimes cranky band director all with ease. It means so much to me that alums are willing to work our camp. Especially the alum named Matt Alessandrini. He is a grad from before sloan. That may not seem to mean much. But through all the changes in director he still remains loyal to the program and embraces my way..... even when it is something he probably thinks is stupid. And having my beautiful wife on staff tops it all off. I always get sooo nervous teaching in front of her. She is the best most caring teacher I know and watching her and learning from her makes me better person. Suffice it to say that the band is a long way from great..... but we are on our way. And as Anthony Alessandrini always says when Band Camp sets a great tone for the year- its time to get excited. And I am excited.
