Now that Im officially in, I guess I can finally announce the big news Ive been hinting at recently: Starting February 2nd Im going back to school, to attend a program called Developers Bootcamp that in a rather intensive 18 weeks will get me fluent in a number of different computer languages and protocols (including Ruby on Rails, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, Github and more), plus has a career center that will help me find a corporate job afterwards. Lets be clear -- the reason Im doing this is because at the age of 45, the industries Ive been working in for the last twenty years (graphic design, copywriting, experimental marketing, startups, arts administration and more) have all been destroyed by the Great Recession, and I am now literally out of money and cant get anyone to hire me no matter what I try; this is essentially a glorified Hail Mary for me, so I would appreciate it if you wouldnt make fun of me for trying it, even in jest, because my fragile self-confidence just wont be able to take it right now. (I am more nervous about taking academic tests again than anything else Ive done in the last twenty years of my life.) The good news, though, is that 90 percent of DBC graduates get a job within the first couple of months after finishing, and that the average starting salary for graduates is $75,000; so if all goes according to plan, I will finally be able to start sinking the kind of money into my small press later this year that it has so desperately needed for so long now, plus other little benefits like not having to worry anymore how Im going to make rent each month. The terror begins in 20 days, so wish me luck!
