Now that I’ve had a couple days of sleep I’m beginning to reflect on the lessons of the past two weeks. Here are a few in no particular order: 1. The moment you step off the curb to J-walk you can pretty much be assured there will be a cop nearby to hand you a citation. But if you’re racing across town like you’re in a Die Hard movie because your wife stopped breathing and is turning a freakish shade of purple—and you really could use a police escort—there will not be a cop to be seen the entire 20-minute drive. 2. There is no team of doctors and nurses waiting at the Emergency Room door to rush your loved one into a room. Instead, as you come to a screeching halt and jump out of the car screaming “I need help—she’s not breathing!” expect to be greeted by a nice young man in a bellhop jacket offering you a wheelchair. Then once you make it through the door you will have to wait in line while the woman inside the glass cage peruses your ID and insurance information. She will appear to ignore the woman slumped over in the wheelchair so as to not interrupt the admissions process. And finally you will have the pleasure of waiting while the pompadour that heads up the welcoming committee prances around making sure everyone else is being served before allowing you into the actual ER where there are actual doctors and nurses. TV, you lied to me. 3. If you have a friend jump in the back seat to help you get your loved one to the ER be sure to disengage the child-proof locking system so he’s not left pounding on the doors and windows desperately trying to get out once you arrive. 4. Hospitals are not a place of rest and healing. You’ll get more sleep at the food court at the Mall of America. 5. Some people should not go into nursing. ‘Nuff said. 6. Empathy and compassion are all around. Sometimes it takes a tragedy to see them.
