Now that the Synod on the Family has closed for now, it is apparent that the Bishops did not address one serious issue that faces pastors every day when it comes to marriage: How many bridesmaids is appropriate? Ok. Maybe not that question but this one: Can my dog, Obie, bring up the rings? Right. Maybe this one: At one time can the fire dancer perform her ring dance during the wedding? or Is there a dry ice machine at the Church or will you rent one for us? One groom-to-be said, My bride has watched the Disney Channel and TLC her whole life. She wants the Disney wedding. He said it with exhaustion not enthusiasm. Weddings are a big deal and big business. Those facts and figures are all over the internet. Google it. The internet breaking (dont Google) Kim Kardashian/ Kanye West wedding is a prime example. I believe they had 3 weddings total. I fear one of them may or may not have been a Catholic wedding. I dont Google that too deep. But it was probably big too. Dry ice and all. The pope commented on celebration versus spectacle in his homily yesterday. From CNA: -Although this celebration is something beautiful that we will experience in heaven, our human weakness is often drawn toward spectacles, the Bishop of Rome said, noting how often we use normal celebrations to create a big scene. Weddings are a good example, he said, observing how often times the couple getting married are more concerned with putting on a “fashion show, being seen, vanity,” than receiving the sacrament. On the other hand, “the Kingdom of God is silent, it grows inside. The Holy Spirit nourishes it through our willingness, in our land, which we have to prepare.”- catholicnewsagency/news/for-pope-francis-kingdom-of-god-grows-by-silent-witness-not-spectacles-98092/ Although it is the dream of many brides to have the princess wedding, or even the groom who wants to put on a good show for the folks, each sacrament is a way for the Kingdom to come to us. Imagine a wedding in meditative, contemplative, simplicity. Now keep imagining it until it feels good! We can do that!
