Now that the dust has settled Ill take time yo make criticisms of Zambian football. 1. FORMATION In the modern more possessive game no good team will use a 4-1-2-1-2 shape unless they are playing it close centrally. The more modern formations are 4-4-2 (debatable) 4-2-3-1 , 4-5-1 and the more attacking 4-3-3. For the most part these formations are slight evolutions from 4-4-2 but its notable that none of them uses the midfield system that has one isolated figure in a deep lying midfielder, two wingers and a all out attacking midfielder. The more creative and holding approach takes two central midfielders in a box to box system sharing the defensive and attacking duties in a 60% to 40% ratio. Maintaining the wingers and dragging one striker a little deeper to play a no. 10, no.8 mashup behind the main striker. This shape allows for more flowing player like when Kangwa played alongside Mayuka upfront. The isolation of the anchor man left us exposed at the back while the attacking midfielder was a ghost worker on the day. 2. SELECTION. To have an efficient squad on limited legs players have to be able to play multiple positions and multple formations or tactics. Zambia took two holding midfielders. One as a defensive cover. But no Box to box. I cant imagine any good team without one even The 2012 champions had Isaac Chansa performing that role. 3. TRANSITION When possession is lost a team needs to press regardless of whose area it is in order to suffocate tge counter attack. Zambia did this poorly and have conceded needless corner kicks for it. The Quicker the transition the better and more unified the defensive performance will be. 4. DEFENDERS We may have lost the best local defender to injury by accident but the selection was poor. For me Malama and Munthali dont quite cut it. I can name 5 better center halves from the same local league. Sunzu was to be our key man in tge defense but struggled to get his commanding game goin. That right there is why were not yet winning games.
