Now that the teachers are dealing with your kid all day – I’ll tell you what they (The Teachers and your Kids) need from you… If your kids aren’t perfect angels at home all day – chances are, they’re not perfect in school either. So says, Ron Clark, author of “The End of Molasses Classes,” and he has some practical advice for all us parents – especially when the child misbehaves at school: And it happens … they are kids. First • Don’t make excuses for them – it hurts their chances of developing a strong work ethic and success. • Don’t helicopter or swoop in to defend them. It’s OK for your child to get in trouble sometimes. It builds character and teaches life lessons. • Trust the professionals. Teachers work with kids every day and might see your child in a different light than you do. If they give you advice, don’t fight it, hear them out. They could be doing you a BIG favor. Finally and this one is critical • Don’t badmouth the teacher. If you don’t respect him or her, your child won’t either. If you have a legitimate concern – talk to the teacher privately, or take it to the principal if necessary but by you showing respect for authority your child id gaining a most valuable lesson, from their best teacher.
