Now that we are almost into cold weather, at least here in Upstate - TopicsExpress

Now that we are almost into cold weather, at least here in Upstate New York I thought Id share about keeping warm in Plain Dress. This baffled me in the beginning when I was trying to figure it all out. One thing I will say it that long skirts can be WARMER than pants, though you might think otherwise. Under my long skirt I wear leggings, usually found at Salvation A. If they are too long I just cut and hem them to whatever length I need. Or alternatively long johns from Gohn Brothers catalog. over that can come as many slips etc. as I need, but usually I dont need more than my usual nylon slip and maybe a cotton slip (both from Gohn Bro.s). Be sure the nylon is the bottom layer, against your legs, to keep the rest from riding up. I could also wear woolies, as my grandmother used to call them, which are thicker long underwear that only comes to your knee, or wherever you like. I also could add a thicker, maybe wool slip. Then over all that my usual dress or skirt. On the top I wear a cotton undershirt and then long sleeved knit shirts in dark colors under my dark jumpers. If I am wearing a cape dress I just put on a thin nylon cardigan over it and then either a wool sweater, or a wool sweater plus shawl to go out. For real New York winter outdoors I wear a regular unglamorous coat over the sweaters. Around us the Amish have beautiful black full length capes, but the Mennonites just wear whatever plainish coat they can get. I havent yet figured out the feet part so well. My nice black shoes are not warm enough for winter really, though the Amish ladies manage somehow, and big winter boots look very odd with plain dress! Im always in search of black not-so-bulky winter boots! Oh, and Ive recently discovered the coziness of a soft head scarf. I got the synthetic black scarf from Gohn Brothers and grab it to go over my cap whenever I run outside in coolish weather. Very warm and really covers my ears like no hat I ever had, which feels protective and healthy. (I look a bit like an Eastern European grandma with the scarf ;) ) Anyone else have tips for winter wear? Keep warm, Barb
