Now that we have a new Farm Bill in place, this Friday is the deadline for farmers and forestry landowners to re-enroll in the Conservation Stewardship Program. It provides federal dollars to people who agree to improve their soil, water, and air quality; Seth Earl is the USDAs District Conservationist in Scottville, and says most area farmers stay up on such issues. Roughly 20,000 farmers nationwide have the five-year contracts – Earl says nearly four-dozen such deals are in this area, covering almost 16,000 acres. Stop by the USDA office in either Scottville, Bear Lake, or Shelby to “re-up” your stewardship contract.
