Now the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it to the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon. When the Ashdodites arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and set him in his place again. And the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 1st Samuel 5:1-4 Because of the sin of its spiritual and religious leadership, the Israelites suffered a severe military defeat by the Philistines, and lost their High Priest and his sons. The Israelites also lost the manifest Presence of God in their midst by the Philistines capturing the Ark of the Covenant, (the small chest where the Shekinah glory of God dwelt, along with other sacred relics from the Israelites history) Sin has dreadful consequences; not only in the lives of individuals, but sins destructive consequences extend upward even to the national level where entire nations are brought into bondage, slavery and defeat because of it. God is no respecter of persons, and His judgments upon sin included His chosen people, Israel. Israel mistakenly believed it could walk in sin, and assume that because they were Gods people and He dwelt in their midst, God was somehow obligated to defend them and grant them victory against their enemies. That was a fatally wrong assumption. (Part Two)
